Poison kills experts too. Poor and hungry people often eat things they shouldn't. McDonalds and BBKing don't kill you right away, but they are a staple for the poor.

Culling the herd.
It's not unusual for people to THINK they know what they're doing, and be 100% wrong. Poisonings of immigrants in the U.S. has climbed in the past 20 years because of people picking mushrooms that they think are "just like the ones at home."

I pick and eat mushrooms every spring and fall, with some summer luck too. There are several distinctive kinds, like morels and chanterelles, and several kinds of boletus (some of these are emetic but none are deadly), and all puffballs are edible. You don't have to have a phd in mycology, my grand parents picked mushrooms, just exercise reasonable caution and don't eat them if there is the LEAST doubt about what you've found.
I suspect this was a deliberate suicide. 60 year old women are not noted for adventurous eating.

We picked mushrooms for a whole different reason when we were young. I would not do this now without doing plenty of research. I can't remember off the top of my head if it was the ones with purple collars or not that would kill you. I do recall looking for a sunburst on the tops. But we knew then and were quite careful.
A girl we knew went picking with her boyfriend and he didn't know what he was doing. She drank some tea made from what they picked and spent two days on the toilet before they took her to the hospital. She survived but damaged her kidneys and liver. The poison from specific mushrooms is extremely toxic and often fatal. We knew the term "Death Angel" even then.

I'm surprised she lived to 61. I was taught at a very young age not to eat wild mushrooms because some are posionous and hard to identify. But I do love store-bought baby bellas.
