After reading the artical I would like to give a report from here on the Canadian prairies. For most areas the snow fall was not adequate so we started off dry and much of the crop that went into the ground in late April went into dry soil so emergence was spotty, the temperatures have been extremely cool so plant vigor is also poor. It is estimated that 25% of the winter wheat was killed because of lack of snow cover. Alot of farmers who were optimistic through the winter became cautious as the price of wheat started to retreat and the price of fertilizer went ballistic this led to a reduction in fertilizer which will impact crops. The dry weather seems to have now changed into a monsoon season and this is causing some flooding and stopping crop spraying. The idea of a normal crop is even beginning to fade in many farmers minds and the concern now is will the crop we produce pay for the inflated cost that we saw this spring. (continued)

I have waited all of my life for a time that maybe farmers recieve an earning that is somewhat reflective on what we have invested, the risk we face, and the work we do. But as I look at the event that will happen in the world as a result of food shortages I wonder if the money I have so long waited for will not leave me with an empty feeling.

Most of my Dad's family were farmers

The work was hard and the hours were long considering the money they made. Some years they lost so much money they didn't know if they could keep going

I heard a report last evening that much of the corn crop etc in the midwest has been destroyed by the rain

I wonder how much of the corn that eventually is harvested will end up as ethanol instead of food

Food prices are only going to go higher
