Shhhh! Don't tell anybody about this. Then my daily sugar rush would be made illegal. And then what about my caffeine?

Seriously, at a place that I used to work, we had those old 25 cent coffee machines with the poker hands on the cups. There was a button for extra strong and extra sugar. I always pressed both. I even parked 2 parking lots away from the building I my office was in just to go into the building with the coffee. My coworkers called it "liquid cocaine", and I never disputed them. By noon, I had gone through about a half dozen of these cups. I really need my sugar/caffeine buzz!

My parents kept me away from processed foods growing up and, while I hated them for it when I was a kid, I'm very grateful that they ignored my whining and wheedling (what does a kid know about what's best for her?). I never developed much of a taste for processed sugary foods, sodas, chips, candies, or McFood, and honestly can't stomach much of it as an adult. It makes me physically ill. Since I started refusing anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it, my tastes have started to shift even more. I just simply don't like all the fake stuff, it tastes "off" like there's something wrong with it. I'd much rather eat an apple than a candy flavored like one, and I look forward to summer because it's strawberries and blueberries and raspberries, oh my. My favorite sugary treat is a nice bowl of fresh ripe figs still warm from the sun. :D Mmm... figgy goodness.

So that's why when I quit everything else, I decided that I was at least going to leave the sugar addiction out of my 12-step program! I knew I needed to have one vice left!

All joking aside, I have been in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction for 12 years now, and sugar and nicotine just are real bears when it comes to stopping. I was a hard-core addict who almost sold my car at one point for drugs, but it was easier to lick that addictive craving than the craving for sugar or nicotine. Personally, I don't need convincing that the sugar addiction is more powerful. I'll freak out and run to my car and scrape pennies and other change off the floor if I don't have enough money on me to buy a Snickers at the convenience store when I'm craving one. It's really wild, and it's as bad or almost as bad as drug-seeking behavior.

Sugar is in everything processed, as is salt. They're in there to trick you into thinking the food is of higher quality than it is (how many people dip a fresh strawberry in corn syrup?) If you can taste the salt as a distinct flavor, it's probably a bad idea to eat it. Same with sugar.

I recall one anecdote by a nutritonalist along the lines of, "If processed bacon doesn't taste salty to you, you've got problems."

People need to demand more information about what's in their food, where the stuff came from, who produced it, and under what conditions it was produced. So much of the industry is built around keeping people happily ignorant, which is both insulting and dangerous.

Plus, it's kinda silly to wind up fat and exhausted because you ate cheap, crappy food. It's far better to get fat on healthy, delicious food cooked by people who know what they're doing, who love food, and who want to help you love it too.

        Fudge House truffles anyone?

Couldnt this have something to do with taste? Maybe the rats chose the sugar because it tasted much, much better? Just a thought..

To tell you the truth I don't think I believe this study. I've learned about addiction and I quite frankly find it hard to believe that sugar has the same dopamine releasing effects as cocaine.

Sure, I've had the occasional hankering for a Snickers, but my hankering in no way adds up to addiction. If it were addiction, I wouldn't have a problem with not eating one, eating one would give me intense pleasure, and not eating one would give me the opposite feeling.

I know how cocaine is administered in these tests, and I think it's more likely that rats would eat food that tasted better than their pellets, than press a lever to administer a shot of cocaine. Studies have shown rats to intentionally self-administer so much cocaine that they killed themselves, I've yet to hear of it from sugar.

I would give you double click on that if I could. I don't know what cocaine taste like, but I would bet sugar test better. Sounds like another stupid study.

Dr. Ann Blake Tracy has done in depth research about sugar, aspertame,SSRI and the relationship these highly addictive and dangerous drugs have to our epidemic of deminishing health. As far as sugar being more addictive than cocaine, this is historically documented and well known amoung war historians. Before the war OF terrorism, or the war OF drugs, long before the world wars, history shows that many peoples have had wars fought over one quite valuable commodity..SUGAR. There were SUGAR WARS fought on this planet. This is Jamal Windfall and you can take my science to the bank son. This is nothing new, very very old stuff we are dealing with. Its really a matter of the profane masses getting up to speed and breaking through the falsehood, illusions and propaganda to see the world for what is really is and not how it is repacked to them.

To me the sad thing is if rats prefer sugar over cocaine what is wrong with all the crack heads, you likely wouldn't have to commit a crime to get a couple of sugar cubes. To all those people who are opposed to sugar, yea it will kill you eventually but at least when you have a suger buzz on you usually aren't impared mentally.

There are many natural sweeteners that are not as "addictive" as plain old sugar. If you are thinking about going to artificial sweeteners, think again. These chemical agents such as Sweet n' Low, Equal, etc. use Sucralose and others to get that no calorie sugar substitute. I highly suggest reading a book called "Sweet Deception." It talks much about sugar addiction but most about artificial sweeteners which are basically poison to our bodies. Many natural sweeteners that have been used overseas in the Orient have tried to make their way into our market but the FDA proclaimed them "unsafe" even though Billions of people have been using them far longer (without any side effects) than any artificial sweetener. It is the FDA that needs to be investigated as they are in bed w/ the sugar and artificial sweetener companies (and many others).

That was the conclusion we came to in the 1960's.

These Amderican FDA should be shut down. Many foods approved and sold turn out to far worse than hard narcotics.

At long last some hard truths have come out, but what took them so long?

Ingest it, don't snort, smoke or shoot up. Simple rules for the addicted. And sugar substitutes are not safe either.

Well - I guess I'd better take the sugar out of all the sugar bowls here and put in cocaine. Think how much healthier we'll be. Might be a problem with supply though - some people will probably fill up their coffee cups with "sugar" and forget to put in any coffee...

Yes, every parent SHOULD know this...but do they practice it? I see toddlers w/ a kid's cup full of soda as compared to water or juice. Parents control what their kids eat as they have the purchasing power yet child obesity is off the charts. I was at Applebee's this weekend and next to us I saw a child around the age of 9 or 10 and all his meal consisted of about 10 fried mozzarella sticks. You would be surprised on how many people do not know what a "healthy" meal is. Most think that a salad drenched in dressing is healthy, however, slopping on a fattening dressing defeats the purpose.

The government should regulate the consumption of sugar. People should have to take training classes where they can earn a permit to allow them to buy sugar and products containing sugar. Everyone should have a limit to how much they can purchase. We need to protect people from themselves.

All this was debunked years ago. There is no correlation between sugar intake and behavior. Rats prefer sugar water to cocain because it tastes better. Sometimes a double chocoate truffle is just a double chocolate truffle.

If you are intaking a lot of sugar (or caffeine, crack) your body naturally adjusts itself to operate/process the amount consumed. As w/ any addictive substance, your body grows accustomed to certain levels and becomes dependent on it. This is why we intake more and more sugar etc. in order to feel the effects of it.

A good example would be coffee drinkers. Everyone started on maybe 1 cup a day or in the morning. After a period of time your body needs more in order to feel the effects of the caffeine. Before you know it, you are drinking 2-3 in the AM and not adding sugar or creamer as it dilutes the caffeine even more.

I would have to disagree if someone were to say that the same findings in this article were true in humans. How many drug addicts do you know that would prefer a big juicy hamburger vs. a quick fix of their favorite drug?
